The Final Countdown: Windows 10 Support Ends in a month.
Time is running out faster than we’d like to admit. With October 14, 2025 rapidly approaching, we’re now in the final countdown for Windows 10 support. If you’re still running Windows 10, this isn’t just another tech update to ignore – it’s a critical deadline that will affect your security, productivity, and peace of mind.
This shouldn’t be a surprise. We’ve warned about it in this blog many times, and in our monthly KARE reports.
What Exactly Happens on October 14?
After October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will still work, but it will become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Microsoft will stop releasing patches entirely – no security fixes, no bug repairs, nothing.
This creates a serious problem: we cannot patch Windows 10 machines after this date because Microsoft won’t be providing any patches.
Your computer will continue to boot up and run your programs, but any new security vulnerabilities discovered will remain permanently unpatched.
The Security Reality Check
Security experts are warning that cyber criminals will increasingly focus on Windows 10 security vulnerabilities after the end of support because it will be worth it. With Windows 10 still holding over 60% market share, it represents a massive target for hackers.
Running an unpatched system isn’t just risky – it could invalidate your cyber insurance. Many insurance policies require businesses to maintain current security patches and updates. When Microsoft stops providing these patches, your (unpatched) Windows 10 machines could become a liability that voids your coverage.
It Won’t Break Overnight, But Time Isn’t on Your Side
It is imortant to be practical. We all know that your Windows 10 computer won’t suddenly stop working on October 15. However, the risks compound over time:
Immediate concerns:
- No security patches for newly discovered vulnerabilities
- Potential cyber insurance complications
- Microsoft’s own Office 365 subscription loses compatibility with Windows 10 in October
Medium-term challenges:
- Third-party software developers will also stop releasing updates for Windows 10 at some point
- New applications may not support Windows 10
- Hardware drivers for new equipment may not be available
Your Options Moving Forward
Option 1: Upgrade to Windows 11 (Recommended) If your hardware supports it, upgrading to Windows 11 is the best path forward. You’ll get continued security updates, new features, and peace of mind. Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool to see if your current machine is compatible.
Option 2: Replace Your Hardware If your current PC can’t run Windows 11, it might be time for a refresh. Modern computers are more secure, more efficient, and designed for today’s digital demands.
Option 3: Extended Security Updates (ESU) Microsoft will offer an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumer customers who want to continue using their existing PC after support has ended. This provides critical security updates for at least one year, but it comes at a cost and is only a temporary solution.
Don’t Wait – Plan Now
With less than two months remaining, waiting isn’t an option. Whether you need to upgrade existing machines, purchase new hardware, or explore extended support options, the time to act is now.
