Microsoft are making their authenticator even safer!
Most of us will have experienced random pop-ups on authenticator asking us to approve access to our systems. We will have wondered what triggered it. Is it a hacker?
Now we’ll be able to get more information. Your system administrator (for our clients, that’s normally us – Kinetics) will soon be able to enable the following:
- Application context: Shows you which application is being signed into.
- Geographic location context: Shows you where the login is coming from, with the location based on the IP address of the device they are signing into.
These are welcome enhancements for your practical cybersecurity
In addition, we will be able to make the authentication more secure and make it harder to accidentally approve logins. We will be getting the option to require users to enter a number displayed on the sign-in screen when approving an MFA request in the Microsoft Authenticator app. This feature is critical to protecting against MFA fatigue attacks which are on the rise. (It is also the precursor to passwordless sign-ins)
