NCSC warns law firms

It’s not surprising that legal practices are targeted by cyber-criminals.

By their very nature, they hold considerable amounts of private “PII” data (personally identifiable information).  On top of that, law firms are typically busy, pressured environments where it is possible that a busy lawyer might be vulnerable to a cyber-criminal’s clever fake sites and emails.

Recently one of our clients was targeted in a clever scam attempt that was obviously customise to try to trick them – fortunately our client was aware and vigilant and the attack failed.

This is part of a growing wave of attacks that has caught the attention of NZ’s national cyber-security agency, NCSC.  Tom Roberts, NCSC threat and incident response team lead from NCSC said that “in recent weeks his organisation had seen attacks against laws firms on an almost daily basis and there were concerns some may have not yet realised their systems had been hacked.”

Kinetics KARE Foundation clients can take comfort in the knowledge that the security and monitoring services in place are designed to protect against these types of threats.  We’re regularly evaluating the technologies and processes to improve these layers of protection too.

If you’re not protected with Kinetics KARE Foundation, we are recommending, like the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), that you check your IT systems.  Kinetics can help.

The nature of threats is always evolving.  To keep pace, we have redesigned our KARE Security Plus product and made it an affordable addition to the KARE Foundation service.  This is now a new 24/7/365 extended active threat hunting and intervention service.  Foundation clients that wish to augment their protection with this new service can talk to their account manager.
